LAFAYETTE — The family of three LSU students who were hit by a car in South Africa while attending the FIFA World Cup soccer event is in need of assistance. A fund in the Lafayette family’s name has been set up at Home Bank locations in Lafayette and Baton Rouge. Last week, a car struck Kellie Murphy and Brian Murphy, who both attend LSU, and their sister Nicole Murphy, who was a student at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Nicole Murphy, a medical student, was killed instantly. Kellie Murphy, a junior and member of the LSU soccer team, suffered a mild concussion. Their brother, Brian Murphy, a sophomore at LSU, is in critical condition in a hospital in South Africa, according to an LSU news release. The Murphy family is incurring high expenses while they work to bring their children home to Lafayette. There are particular concerns about health care and repatriation costs. It is unclear what will be covered by the family’s insurance policy because the students were in another country when the accident took place. The Murphy family includes a total of six children: five enrolled at or have graduated from either LSU or the LSU medical school. The youngest Murphy sibling, Danielle, is scheduled to attend LSU in the fall as a soccer player. The four youngest Murphy siblings were attending the World Cup with their father when the accident took place. Funeral arrangements for Nicole Murphy have not yet been finalized.
