Fatality at sugarloaf pkwy & old ptree rd morning of July 10

(July 10, 2010 @ approximately 8:55 am) Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit responded to the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Old Peachtree Road to investigate a fatal accident. This intersection falls in an unincorporated area of Duluth in Gwinnett County. The preliminary investigation has revealed that vehicle 1, a silver 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 58 year old Michael H. Colson, was northbound on Old Peachtree Road. Vehicle 1 ran a red light and entered the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway. As vehicle 1 entered the intersection, it collided with vehicle 2 an eastbound tan Toyota Highlander, driven by 47 year old Stacy H. Starkey. Vehicle 1 continued northbound and struck vehicle 3 a westbound white Lexus RX350, driven by 49 year old Mumtaz A. Virani. Vehicle 1 and Vehicle 3 both turned over from the force of the collision. Michael Colson was ejected from vehicle 1 during the collision and died on scene as a result of the injuries sustained from the collision. Mumtaz Virani was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. There are no indications that alcohol was involved with this accident. It appears the primary cause of the accident was the driver of vehicle 1 failing to stop for the red light.
