Alabama teen killed in wreck on US 98

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – Officials say a 16-year-old from Fairhope has been killed in a Magnolia Springs wreck involving an 18-wheeler. Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Rod Stead said Martin Farrell was driving westbound on U.S. 98 when he veered across the center line, nearly struck two eastbound cars and slammed into the front of the 18-wheeler. State troopers said he was pronounced dead at the scene Friday. The truck driver, 37-year-old Michael Shelper, was treated for minor injuries. Stead told the Press-Register that both drivers were wearing seatbelts. He said it could have been a lot worse if traffic hadn’t been so light that evening. Trooper spokesman Cpl. Steve Smith said investigators were working to determine why Farrell crossed the center line. Stead said there was no indication that Farrell had attempted to stop.
