Aggravated Assault by Motor Vehicle

via ScanGwinnett.com.

(Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 @ approximately 12:33 PM) Officers of the Gwinnett County Police Department responded to a report of a Hit and Run incident on I85 Southbound, near the Hamilton Mill Exit. After leaving the scene of that accident, the suspect vehicle involved continued south on I85 causing a number of collisions and intentionally ramming other vehicles on the roadway. These incidents occurred within incorporated and unincorporated areas of Gwinnett County following Interstate 85, beginning near Hamilton Mill and ending near Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Preliminary investigation has found that a red 2007 Dodge Ram Truck was involved in a hit-and-run incident in the Hamilton Mill area. A Gwinnett County Police Officer responding to that incident obtained a description of the Ram truck as the suspect vehicle. As a description of the suspect vehicle was being broadcast to area police officer, several 911 calls were received from drivers traveling south on I85. These callers indicated that a vehicle of the same description, a red Dodge Ram pick-up truck, was speeding while being driven in an erratic and dangerous manner. An alert officer quickly located the vehicle on I85 southbound near Boggs Road. In an effort to get the vehicle to stop, the officer followed the suspect vehicle in the HOV lane and activated his emergency lights. The driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, slowed and indicated to the officer that he was going to pull over, to the right side of the road. The suspect negotiated several lanes of traffic, moving to the right. Reaching the right lane and shoulder the suspect’s vehicle accelerated and sped away from the officer without explanation. Given the nature of the situation, the officer followed at a safe distance, attempting to encourage the suspect to yield. Less than a minute later, the suspect vehicle intentionally rammed another vehicle. In short succession, the suspect vehicle rammed another vehicle, continuing southbound on I85. Realizing the danger being presented by this driver, the pursuing officer called for a PIT certified officer to conduct a strategic maneuver designed to disable the suspect vehicle, preventing further damage or harm. Before the PIT officer could accomplish this intervention technique, the suspect vehicle rammed yet another vehicle and became disabled. The driver was immediately taken into custody. The suspect in this matter has been identified as 52 year-old Mike Strawn of Dacula. Strawn has been charged with a total of 29 criminal and traffic related offenses, including:

Aggravated Assault – 7 counts
Hit and Run – 6 counts
Following Too Closely – 7 counts
Aggressive Driving – 4 counts

Speeding – 1 counts

The investigation is of this incident is ongoing and additional charges are expected. Officers are engaged in an effort to determine the suspect’s motivation and potential use of any drugs, legal or illegal.
