Family mourns killed toddler; father apologizes for attacking driver

Killed in Car Accidnet

HEPHZIBAH, Ga.—Investigators are calling it a horrible accident, an accident that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy. James Wright IV, better known as Binkie, was taken off life support Tuesday, after being hit by a car Sunday night on Boykin Road. His mother and grandmother describe little Binkie as a happy child, full of life and energy. However, they spent the day picking out the smallest white suit for his funeral, a suit they say is meant for an angel. It was supposed to be a fun family game of catch, until the sound of brakes in the night changed their lives forever. “It could be your child it could be your grandchild,” says Binkie’s aunt and Godmother Sandra Reed. Investigators say 2-year-old James “Binkie” Wright darted into the street after a football. The driver says she saw a shadow and then heard a thud. “The car hit him and drug him up underneath and drug him and then threw him out the back,” says Binkie’s mother Page Brown. “I was trying to get him to breathe for granny. I was trying to get him to breathe,” describes his grandmother Clarecia Wright. Binkie was taken off life support on Tuesday. “I just felt like he was gonna open his eyes and grab me,” says Page, trailing off. His grandmother says she felt him die in her arms that night. “I do know that his little soul left in my arms and that’s my special grand baby. I watched him come in and I watched him go out,” says Clarecia. Investigators say the driver will not face charges. The skid marks, and spray paint act as scars and serve as painful reminders. “God didn’t let him feel any pain. We saw the pain, but he didn’t feel anything,” says Clarecia. “He means so much to me. He’s so special . Not just to me, but to everyone,” adds Page. After the wreck, investigators say the toddler’s father dragged the driver out of the car, then beat her up. Charges against him are pending. “Can’t control it at the time, when things like that happen there’s just certain things you can’t control,” explains Binkie’s father James “Tre” Wright. Tre is speaking out, and apologizing for his alleged attack. “I just want to tell her I’m sorry for my actions cause it’s not right for anyone to get abused on or hit on or anything. No one deserves that. I can’t explain why it happened, or how it happened because I still to this day can’t remember exactly how it happened,” says Tre. “When it’s a baby, its just really extremely hard. We are not a violent family. Ask the question, if you were there what would you do?” Says Clarecia. News 12 did try to contact the driver to see how she was doing, and to get a comment from her but she declined. Investigators say Binkie was not unattended and no charges will stem from him running out in the road. The family says they feel no one is to blame for Binkie’s death, but they do believe speed played a factor.
