Father, son killed in I-20 crash

A 67-year-old Temple man and his 15-year-old son were killed in a wreck Monday on Interstate 20 between Bremen and Temple. Georgia State Patrol Sgt. 1st Class J.K. Boatright said Bernard Brown and his son, Devon, died in the crash around 4:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-20 near mile marker 17. Boatright said Bernard Brown was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck in the left lane when he came in contact with a Ford van in the right lane driven by James Turner, 56, of Marietta. The two vehicles separated, causing them to leave the road. “The Dodge pick-up traveled into the median and struck several trees,” Boatright said. “The Ford van traveled off the right side of the roadway. It appears the impact with the trees in the median is the cause of the fatalities.” He said Turner complained of neck injuries after the accident. It was raining at the time of the accident, but state patrol officials said preliminary findings show weather was not the cause. The accident is still under investigation. Devon Brown was to begin his sophomore year at Villa Rica High School this fall. “Anytime we lose a child within our school system, it’s a sad day,” Carroll County Schools spokeswoman Elena Schulenburg said. Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home in Douglasville is handling funeral arrangements.
