The driver of a Nissan Pathfinder was cited Monday after police say he ran a red light in midtown Savannah and crashed into another vehicle. At 12:56 p.m., police and fire crews were called to the two-vehicle wreck at Stephenson Avenue and Habersham Street, finding the mangled Nissan flipped on its roof a few yards west of the intersection. Savannah firefighters freed the man who was trapped inside, and he was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, said Gena Moore, spokeswoman for Savannah-Chatham police.
Investigators determined the Pathfinder was headed west on Stephenson when it crossed the red light at Habersham, Moore said. A Jeep Liberty was turning east on Stephenson from Habersham, and the two sport utility vehicles collided. Police cited the injured Nissan driver, whose name was not released. The wreck briefly shut down two lanes of traffic on Stephenson, but police directed traffic and no major tie-ups resulted. A Ford Explorer crashed into the lobby at Carol’s Pampered Pets on Commercial Drive Monday morning after police said the distracted driver’s dog leaped onto her lap.
Police, paramedics and firefighters were dispatched to the shop, in the 300 block of Commercial Drive, about 8:45 a.m., said Gena Moore, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.The female driver told officers she was trying to park when the pet dog startled her, prompting her to accidentally press the accelerator instead of the brakes, Moore said. The vehicle shot over the curb and into the store. Neither the driver nor the dog were injured. Occupants of the store were likewise unharmed.
