A Columbus teenager died at the hospital after being involved in a fatal accident on Mobley Road. According to accident reports, on May 15 at about 9pm, a car was driving east at a high rate of speed when it hit head on with another car traveling west on Mobley Road near Mobley Walk Drive and Ranch Forest Drive. 17 year old Joseph Grant Laverty who was a passenger in the car heading west died at the hospital this morning. According to Muscogee County School District, Laverty was a student at the Northside High School…
Local residents are concerned abput the speed of vehicles traveling along this road. The city is responding by offering more speed traffic enforcement by the police department. Traffic engineers are weighing in on the matter.
According to Columbus Traffic Engineering Manager, Bill Hamlett, Mobley Road has had six accidents last year and this recent accident makes the second serious accident on Mobley this year. Neighbors in the area say the speed limit is a problem, but others say it goes beyond that. Dorothy Duggins who lives in the Mobley Walk subdivision which is right next to where the accident happened says she is going to ask the Mayor for help. “Mobley Road is used as a race course. It’s not just young, it’s old people and I can sit on my porch and you can see people on cell phones and texting and something really needs to be done on Mobley Road,“ Duggins said. Duggins is a part of the Homeowner’s Association and said the speed limit has come up in their meetings before. “I want the speed limit down to 30 or 35,“ she said. Accrding to Hamlett the speed limit from Jason Court to River Road is 45mph. From Jason Ct to Whitesville Road the speed limit is 30mph. Recently, Hamlett said the wrong sign was posted and reflected 5mph off from what it should have been. According to Lt. Mark Starling, police will be watching the area and stepping up patrol. Starling said charges are pending.
Currently, there are 27 calming studies being conducted in Columbus. According to Hamlett, Mobley Road is not a residential street and therefore cannot have a calming study done. According to the website, a calming study is to identify traffic problems in residential areas.

Traffic calming is the slowing or reduction of motor-vehicle traffic to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists and improve the environment for residents. Urban planners and traffic engineers have many strategies for traffic calming. Such measures are common in Australia and Europe (especially Northern Europe), but less so in North America.
