6-year-old killed in tragic accident

By Trey Alverson
A 6-year-old north Fayette boy died Wednesday evening after a car apparently slipped out of park rolled down a driveway, striking and pinning him before coming to rest against a tree. The child’s name has not been released. The accident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on private property at 524 Westbridge Drive in Fayetteville. Fayette County Sheriff’s Maj. Bryan Woodie said the investigation thus far indicates that the 1999 Chrysler Sebring’s transmission slipped out of park, rolled down a driveway and came to rest against a tree after striking the child. The Chrysler was found without the keys in the ignition and, although a 9- year old sibling was inside the vehicle, her presence is not believed to be a factor, Woodie stated.  According to the investigation, a mechanical defect in the Chrysler appears to be the primary cause in this crash.

The investigation, including a comprehensive vehicle inspection, is on-going.  No criminal charges are expected to be made in connection with the incident. Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Pete Nelms said the first responders arrived five minutes after the 911 call.  “An advance life support engine with paramedics onboard arrived at 4:50 p.m. and they in turn requested additional manpower,” Nelms explained. Paramedics raced to pull the boy from beneath the car. A lifeflight helicopter arrived and landed in a nearby cul-de-sac but left without the child. It was the second crash to take the life of a north Fayette child in a two-month period. Angel Anthony, a 16-year-old Sandy Creek student, died in December when the car she was traveling in struck a brick mailbox in unincorporated northern Fayette County.

We hope this investigation determines the cause of this accident so this never happens again. The lawyers at Link & Smith, P.C. extend their sympathy to anybody that was involved in this wreck.
