18-year-old killed in Cherokee wreck

Police believe speed may have been a factor in a Cherokee County wreck that killed a teenager Friday night. As reported by Alexis Stevens of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Clara Norton, 18, of Canton, was ejected when the Mitsubishi Galant she was driving left the roadway just before 6 p.m., according to Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department. The car ended up in a creek, Baker said.

Norton and the passenger, 18-year-old Jacob Arowood, were both taken to Northside Cherokee Hospital, where Norton later died. Arowood, of Canton, was treated for minor injuries. Norton was not wearing a seatbelt, but Arowood was, Baker said.

The accident happened on Shoal Creek Road, near Canton. Norton’s death is the seventh on Georgia roads since 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety web site.

The DPS estimates that 16 people will be killed on state roads during the New Year’s holiday period, which ends Sunday. Over the same time period last year, 22 people died in car accidents in Georgia.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Norton Family. And we hope Jacob Arowood has a speedy recovery from his own injuries.
