Dee Dee’s family said their last goodbyes and closed her casket for the final time. The gym at West Gadsen High was packed beyond capacity. Nearly a thousand people showed up to pay their respects to the girl with the “permanent smile”. A testament to the lives she touched. There were tears, but sadness wasn’t the tone of the day. It was quite the opposite. It was a celebration. A celebration of love and lots of laughter, a celebration of life. And those who knew Dee Dee say it’s the way she would have wanted it. “She was just a nice, kind, funny, like to be loud. A nice person to be around,” said childhood friend, Season Edwards. Tia Bryant was also a friend and she agrees. “Fun, outgoing,always kept a smile. When I was down she was there. Just Dee Dee,” she said. Friends and family say Dee Dee carried out her daily activities with dedication. And basketball was no exception. The lady panthers retired her jersey, and Dee Dee’s mother now has the basketball she played with during her very last game. The Lady Panther Basketball Team shared their memories. “She was the life of the basketball team,she was the life of everything and we gonna remember her always and keep her with us no matter what,” they said. And before leaving, there was one last thing to do. A group huddle… for the team mate who will not be on the court with them physically, but they say will always be with them in spirit. The lady panther basketball team says they will dedicate this rest of this season and next season to Dee Dee.
